Messy Tax Internship

Disappointing Tax Internship Experience

I’m currently interning at a major public Accounting firm, and I have to say, I’m feeling let down by the experience. The communication here is really poor—we often find out important information at the last minute, and by then it’s typically too late to make a difference. When we seek feedback, the response is usually, “We don’t have time for that.” Isn’t that what an internship is supposed to be about?

The training resources consist mostly of slideshows, which only cover the basics. I often feel pretty ineffective—simply entering numbers based on last year’s work. I understand everyone is busy, but the lack of organization makes it seem like we’re just here to fill a gap in labor rather than to truly learn and grow.

I had different expectations going into this internship during the recruiting process. This experience isn’t quite what I envisioned.

  1. It sounds like you’re dealing with a tough internship experience, and it’s completely valid to feel frustrated. Internships should be about growth and learning, but it can be disheartening when it feels more like you’re just filling a role without much guidance.

Have you considered sharing specific feedback with your supervisor or another mentor at the firm? Sometimes, management may not realize how their practices are affecting interns. Additionally, documenting your experiences and maintaining a proactive approach could help improve your situation.

Remember, this experience can also teach you valuable lessons about workplace dynamics and communication. While it might not be what you expected, it can still offer insight into what you want (and don’t want) in your future roles. Stay focused on your goals, and hopefully, you can find opportunities to learn and grow despite the chaos. Good luck!
