Does this make any sense?

Does this situation make sense to anyone?

I’ve been handling the taxes for my sister’s husband for the past ten years, but since they got married in 2024, that’s obviously changed. I’m not a professional tax preparer.

He has a Schedule C, a few rental properties, and partnerships in several small businesses. Now that they’re married, my sister and her husband will be filing jointly, and her friend has taken on the responsibility of preparing their joint return each year.

For some reason, my sister’s husband keeps trying to send me his 2024 tax information. I’ve repeatedly told him that he should send that to his wife’s friend now.

Then, my sister’s friend contacted me and suggested that I just complete the Schedule C as I normally would, and she will attach it to the joint tax return.

I’ve honestly never encountered a situation like this before!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a unique situation, but it does make sense! Since your sister got married, her husband will now be filing jointly with her, and it’s common for couples to have a designated tax preparer for their joint return.

It seems like your sister’s friend is just asking you to complete the Schedule C as you normally would, since you have experience with it. Once you finish that, her friend can include it as part of the couple’s joint tax return.

While it’s not typical for one preparer to handle just part of a couple’s tax situation, it’s not unheard of, especially if you’ve already been doing the Schedule C for years. Just make sure you’re comfortable with the arrangement and that communication is clear among everyone involved. If you have any concerns, it might be worth discussing more with your sister’s friend to ensure everything goes smoothly.
