Career Change/ Work-Life Balance/ Moving Abroad

Hello Everyone,

I’m a 26-year-old male who recently qualified as a CA in the November 2023 attempt. I started my journey at a Big 4 firm in February 2024, focusing on a direct tax role. While the work has been valuable in terms of learning and exposure, I’m facing some common challenges associated with Big 4 firms—long hours, weekend commitments, and issues related to management, risk, and compliance.

After over a year in this role, I’ve realized that this lifestyle isn’t sustainable for me. I’m interested in transitioning to finance, but so far, I haven’t had much luck. Additionally, the idea of relocating abroad for a better work-life balance and improved pay has always appealed to me, even if it means being away from home, family, and friends. I’m starting to feel burned out and unmotivated—though I continue to complete my work, it’s without the passion I once had.

I have a lot on my mind regarding possible job changes, career shifts, and moving abroad, so I thought I’d share my thoughts and seek advice from the community. Any insights or experiences you’d be willing to share would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hey there,

First off, it sounds like you’ve been through a lot in such a short time—congratulations on qualifying as a CA and landing a role at a Big 4 firm! It’s completely understandable to feel burned out given the demanding nature of the profession, especially in a high-pressure environment like that.

If you’re feeling that the current job isn’t sustainable for your well-being, it’s wise to explore your options. Here are a few thoughts based on your situation:

    1. Switching Companies: Sometimes a change of environment can reignite your passion. Look for companies that prioritize work-life balance and have cultures that align more with your values. Consider roles in finance that may offer better hours while still leveraging your skills.

    2. Career Transition: If finance is where your interest lies, don’t hesitate to network—reach out to professionals in that space, attend workshops or seminars, and consider courses or certifications that might help bridge any gaps.

    3. Moving Abroad: This can be a big change, but if you feel it could offer you the balance you seek, it might be worth exploring. Research potential countries where you can find opportunities in finance with a focus on good work-life balance.

    4. Take Care of Yourself: It’s crucial to prioritize your mental health. Even while exploring these paths, make time for activities that recharge you—whether that’s exercise, hobbies, or catching up with friends and family.

    5. Seek Guidance: Consider talking to mentors or career coaches. They can provide valuable insights and possibly help redirect your career toward a path that’s more fulfilling.

Remember, it’s okay to take time and explore options. Your happiness and well-being are what’s most important. Good luck with your decisions, and know that it’s perfectly normal to feel uncertain during these transitions!

    Take care!
