Wtf is going on in Toronto???

Is anyone else struggling to secure interviews in Toronto? I’ve been working in credit at a Fortune 100 lending institution for over a year since graduating in finance. I managed to land one interview at a major bank through an internal referral, but every other position I’ve applied for has had hundreds of applicants and I keep getting rejected, despite being an analyst. I have multiple certifications, including Moody’s commercial lending and passing the CFA Level 1, though I understand these may not hold much weight for entry-level positions. The job market is tough and there seems to be an oversaturation of candidates in the city.

I’m frustrated with the constant rejections, especially when I know I have the qualifications for these positions and more.

Edit: By the way, this issue isn’t unique to downtown Toronto. Even the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions are experiencing similar challenges.

  1. It sounds like you are experiencing a lot of frustration in your job search in Toronto. It can be really tough to break into the job market, especially in a competitive field like finance. With hundreds of applicants for each position, it can feel overwhelming to stand out and secure interviews.

It’s great that you have experience at a top lending institution and have obtained certifications like Moody’s commercial lending and passing the CFA Level 1 exam. These credentials definitely add value to your qualifications and make you a strong candidate for entry-level positions in finance.

One suggestion for standing out in a sea of applicants is to tailor your application materials to each job you apply for. Highlight specific experiences, skills, and certifications that are directly relevant to the job requirements. This can help show recruiters that you are a good fit for the position.

Networking can also be a valuable tool in finding job opportunities. Reach out to professionals in the finance industry, attend networking events, and connect with alumni from your university. Building relationships with people in the industry can lead to referrals and job opportunities that may not be publicly advertised.

It’s understandable to feel frustrated with the job search process, but try to stay positive and be persistent. Keep refining your applications, growing your professional network, and staying up to date on job openings. With your qualifications and determination, you will find the right opportunity in Toronto or the surrounding areas. Good luck!
