Will I face the same challenges applying for entry-level public Accounting positions as I have in the industry?
As a non-traditional candidate with a post-bacc certificate in Accounting and having passed the CPA exams, I currently lack Accounting experience. I missed the public accounting hiring season last fall and have been trying to break into the industry since, but I haven’t had much success. I’ve had a few interviews, but I’ve also experienced being ghosted, even with my CPA credentials listed on my resume.
I’ve been applying to industry roles for five months now, but most positions require experience that I don’t have. I’m curious if my prospects might improve when public accounting firms start hiring again this year.

It’s understandable to feel frustrated with your job search, especially with the challenges you’re facing in securing an entry-level position. The good news is that the hiring landscape can vary significantly between public Accounting and industry roles.
Public Accounting firms often have structured training programs designed for candidates without direct experience. Since you have passed the CPA exams and obtained your post-bac certificate, you have valuable credentials that many firms look for. Additionally, public Accounting firms may value your educational background and your commitment to passing the CPA, as they often see these as indicators of a strong work ethic and the ability to learn quickly.
When public accounting firms begin their hiring processes, typically in the late fall or early spring, you’ll likely see a wider array of opportunities open up. Your chances may improve, especially if you focus on applying well before the hiring peak to secure interviews.
In the meantime, consider looking for internships, volunteer positions, or even part-time roles that can help you gain relevant experience, even if it’s not strictly public accounting. These opportunities can make your resume stand out and provide you with practical experience to discuss in interviews.
Networking is also crucial—connect with professionals in the field through LinkedIn, alumni groups, or local accounting associations. Informational interviews can help you learn about the hiring landscape and potentially lead to job referrals.
Overall, while industry roles may be tough to break into without experience, public accounting could present a more favorable opportunity for you. Stay positive, keep applying, and be persistent! Your hard work and qualifications will eventually pay off.
