Why do people say finance jobs have zero impact on the world?
I’ve noticed a trend in this subreddit where individuals claim that those in finance jobs are only in it for the money and that these jobs do not hold any true value or have a positive impact on society.
So, I’m interested in hearing your opinions on what constitutes a job that does make a difference and is pursued for reasons other than financial gain.
Based on the standards by which people judge finance workers, it appears that almost 99% of jobs outside of finance would also be classified as “motivated by money, minimal impact on the world” in my view. What do you all think?

There are several reasons why some people may perceive finance jobs as having zero impact on the world:
Perception of Greed: finance is often associated with greed and the pursuit of wealth. Some people believe that those working in finance are solely motivated by money and personal gain, rather than a desire to make a positive impact on the world.
Lack of Tangible Results: Unlike professions such as healthcare, education, or social work, the impact of finance jobs may not always be immediately visible or tangible. This can give the impression that these jobs are focused solely on profit-making without contributing to the betterment of society.
Ethical Concerns: The finance industry has been marred by scandals and unethical practices in the past, which has contributed to a negative perception of the industry as a whole. People may question the morality and social responsibility of those working in finance, further reinforcing the idea that these jobs have zero impact on the world.
Focus on Numbers: Finance is often seen as a numbers-driven field, where success is measured by profit margins and financial performance. This emphasis on quantitative metrics may overshadow the value of the work being done and lead to the perception that finance jobs are devoid of any meaningful impact.
However, it is important to consider that the finance industry plays a crucial role in driving economic growth, facilitating investments, and supporting businesses and individuals in achieving their financial goals. While the impact of finance jobs may not always be as overt as that of other professions, they are an essential part of the global economy and contribute to the overall functioning of society.
Ultimately, the notion that finance jobs have zero impact on the world may stem from a narrow perspective on what constitutes meaningful work. It is essential to recognize the diverse contributions that different professions make to society and to consider the broader implications of the work being done, even if they may not be immediately apparent.
