Who does your taxes?

Who handles your taxes?

I know many people working in audits have a strong aversion to taxes, but since most of us are on the path to becoming CPAs, do you file your own tax return? Or do you rely on a friend from the tax department to take care of it for you?

Also, just to clarify: if you own a business, do you still choose to do your own taxes?

  1. That’s a great question! Many CPAs have differing approaches when it comes to doing their own tax returns. Some prefer to handle their own taxes because it gives them a better understanding of the nuances in their personal financial situation. Others might choose to have a tax professional or a colleague handle it, especially if the tax situation is complex or if they run a business.

When it comes to having a business, things can get even trickier. Business owners often deal with a myriad of deductions, credits, and specific tax obligations that can be overwhelming. While some might feel confident managing their own taxes, many choose to rely on a tax professional to ensure nothing is overlooked and to optimize their tax strategy.

Ultimately, it boils down to personal comfort with the tax code, the complexity of the financial situation, and the value of saving time versus potential tax savings. What about you? Do you prefer to DIY, or do you leave it to a pro?
