Whats the difference between a Corporate Banker and a RM?

What distinguishes a Corporate Banker from a Relationship Manager (RM)? I’m a bit confused. When referring to a Corporate Banker, does that also include RMs who work with corporate clients, or are these two entirely separate career paths?

  1. The terms “Corporate Banker” and “Relationship Manager (RM)” can indeed be confusing, as they can overlap depending on the context, but they also refer to different roles within the banking industry.

A Corporate Banker generally refers to a banking professional who focuses on providing financial services and solutions to corporations, especially large companies or institutions. Their work typically involves structuring loans, managing credit risk, offering treasury services, and providing specialized financial advice tailored to corporate needs. Corporate bankers often deal with a variety of products, including commercial loans, syndications, and capital markets solutions.

On the other hand, a Relationship Manager (RM) is a role that could exist in various banking sectors, including corporate banking, but also in retail and private banking. In the context of corporate clients, an RM acts as the main point of contact between the bank and the corporate clients. Their role primarily involves building and maintaining relationships, understanding clients’ financial needs, and ensuring that the bank provides appropriate products and services to meet those needs. RMs are often involved in sales and customer service aspects, which may include cross-selling banking products.

In summary, while corporate bankers focus on the financial products and services for large corporations, RMs are more about managing the relationship with those clients. So yes, they can be related — a corporate banker might also take on the responsibilities of an RM when dealing with corporate clients, but not all RMs are corporate bankers. It really depends on the context and the specific responsibilities within a given banking institution.
