Advice Needed: Preparing for My Upcoming Audit Role!
Hello everyone,
I’m excited (and a bit anxious) to share that I’ll be starting as an Audit Graduate at RSM in Australia next year! I’ve heard that balancing work with studying for the CA can be quite challenging, and I’m already feeling the pressure.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has navigated this path. Are there key skills or areas of knowledge I should focus on before I get started? Here are a few things I’m considering:
- Should I familiarize myself with specific Audit software?
- Are there advanced Excel techniques I should hone?
- Would it be beneficial to start reviewing CA materials now?
I have some experience in Accounting, having worked with Xero and MYOB, but I lack a background in auditing. I’m concerned about managing both my training and work commitments once I begin.
Any advice, recommendations, or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Congratulations on your new role at RSM! It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves, and preparing ahead of time can definitely help ease some of that anxiety. Here are some focused recommendations to help you get started properly:
Familiarize Yourself with Audit Software: While specific software may vary by firm, common tools include CaseWare, IDEA, and ACL. If you can identify which programs RSM uses, consider exploring introductory tutorials. Familiarity with these tools can give you a head start.
Enhance Your Excel Skills: Excel is crucial in auditing for data analysis and financial modeling. Focus on advanced functions (like VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, and pivot tables), data visualization, and basic macros. There are plenty of online courses and resources that cater specifically to Excel for finance professionals.
Start Studying CA Materials: Getting a head start on the CA materials can be beneficial, especially in subjects related to auditing, financial reporting, and taxation. This will give you a good foundation and help in retaining information when you’re officially studying. It also helps reduce the burden when you start working.
Understand the Audit Process: Familiarize yourself with the Audit lifecycle—from planning and risk assessment to fieldwork and reporting. The AICPA’s (or equivalent Australian body) resources and framework can provide valuable insights into audit standards.
Soft Skills Matter: Effective communication, time management, and teamwork are vital in an audit role. Practice how to communicate findings clearly and how to work collaboratively with different teams. This will serve you well in client interactions and team settings.
Network and Seek Mentorship: Connect with current or former colleagues at RSM or in the industry. They can provide first-hand insights on what to expect and how to navigate the early days of your career.
Mental Well-being and Work-life Balance: As you’ll be juggling work and CA studies, consider strategies for managing stress and maintaining a healthy work-life balance from the get-go. This could include planning your study schedule, setting boundaries, and ensuring you make time for self-care.
Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, but you’re entering a structured environment that will help you grow. Take it one step at a time, and you’ll do great! Good luck!
