What salary range should I seek for in HCOL?

What salary range should I aim for in a high cost of living area?

Hello everyone! I’m planning a move to Southern California, specifically Orange County. Currently, I reside in a low cost of living area and I’m uncertain about what salary I should be targeting. With 3 years of experience in GL reconciliation and accounts payable, I currently earn under $60k. Do you think it’s reasonable to ask for $85k or more in So Cal, or would that be considered too ambitious?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. When considering a move to a high cost of living area like Orange County, it’s important to research salary expectations carefully, especially given your experience and skills. For someone with 3 years of experience in general ledger reconciliation and accounts payable, salaries can vary widely based on the specific company, industry, and your negotiation skills.

In Southern California, particularly in Orange County, it’s not uncommon for professionals in your field with around 3 years of experience to earn salaries ranging from $70k to $90k+ depending on the organization and the complexity of the role.

Here are a few tips to help you determine an appropriate salary range:

    1. Research: Websites like Glassdoor, Payscale, and LinkedIn Salaries can provide you with insights into typical salary ranges for similar roles in the area.

    2. Network: Reach out to professionals in your field or consider local salary surveys and forums to get personal insights about current market rates.

    3. Cost of Living Adjustment: Keep in mind that Orange County has a significantly higher cost of living compared to many LCOL areas. Factor in housing, transportation, and other living expenses when determining your needs.

    4. Highlight Your Skills: Don’t underestimate your experience and skills. If you have any specialized knowledge, certifications, or additional responsibilities in your current role, leverage this to justify a higher salary.

    5. Consider Overall Compensation: Sometimes benefits, bonuses, and work-life balance can also impact overall compensation. Be sure to consider the entire package when deciding your salary requirements.

Given this information, asking for $80k to $85k is reasonable given the market, especially if you can demonstrate your value. Good luck with your job search!
