The journey in professional Accounting can often feel like a rollercoaster of emotions, especially when career advancement doesn’t seem to align with your efforts. As an auditor at one of the top ten firms, I recently faced the disappointment of not being promoted to the senior level this year. While I understand the reasoning behind the decision—my colleagues appear to have a stronger command of their roles—this experience has left me at a crossroads.

Working in Audit is undeniably demanding. I find myself dedicating over 50 hours a week, and despite my best efforts, I struggle to complete my tasks efficiently. The result? I’m often compelled to put in additional hours without compensation, leading to a sense of burnout. For an annual salary of around $70k, the trade-off feels increasingly unbalanced, especially when I contemplate pursuing further advancement in public Accounting.
