Navigating Career Challenges in Public Accounting: Finding Your Way Forward

In the fast-paced world of public Accounting, facing setbacks in career advancement can be disheartening. Recently, I experienced a setback in my journey; despite my hard work, I was not promoted to a senior position within my firm this year. While I respect the decision, it has forced me to reflect deeply on my current path and future opportunities.

I currently work in Audit at a prestigious top 10 firm, where the demands can be mentally taxing. I find myself struggling to keep up with the expectations — often working 10-plus hours a day but still not meeting productivity goals. It’s disheartening to realize that, despite my commitment and the long hours, I am not performing at the same level as my peers. At this rate, accumulating over 50 hours a week for a salary around $70,000 seems increasingly untenable. The pressure to excel feels relentless, with little clarity on how to progress in my career within public Accounting.

Interestingly, it seems this hiring and promotion stagnation isn’t isolated to my firm; the trend appears widespread across the industry.
