Entering the world of public Accounting can be as challenging as it is rewarding. Many professionals, especially those in high-pressure environments like Audit firms, often find themselves at a crossroads regarding their career paths. Today, I want to share my experiences and reflections on the hurdles of not receiving a promotion and what it means for my future in the field.

Recently, I faced a pivotal moment in my career when I was not promoted to a senior position at a top 10 Audit firm. While I understand the reasoning behind this decision—my peers demonstrate a stronger grasp of the work—I can’t help but feel the weight of this setback. The demands of the job are intense, frequently leaving me mentally drained. My daily routine often stretches over 10 hours, yet I find it challenging to complete a full load of tasks within that time frame, leading me to work extra hours without compensation. Earning approximately $70,000 a year while consistently clocking in over 50 hours weekly feels increasingly unsustainable.

Compounding my concerns is the broader climate in the industry. Many firms, including my own, are adopting a cautious approach to promotions and hiring, a trend that seems to extend across the sector. The current job market within the industry is equally daunting, leaving me to question my attractiveness as a candidate despite having my CPA certification. My limited experience with public companies further complicates my situation.
