Wasn’t promoted to senior – struggling to see a path forward in this field.

Navigating Career Challenges in Public Accounting: My Journey

Finding your footing in the competitive world of public Accounting can be a daunting task, especially when faced with the disappointment of not being promoted. As someone currently working in Audit at a top 10 firm, I recently encountered this struggle firsthand.

Despite my dedication to my role, I was not elevated to a senior position this year. While I can’t dispute the decision—it’s clear that many of my colleagues possess a more robust understanding of their responsibilities—it’s still disheartening. The demands of the job can be mentally taxing, and despite my commitment to long hours, I often feel like I’m falling short.

I typically clock in 50 hours a week, with the pay hovering around $70,000 annually. Truthfully, this investment of time and energy feels disproportionate to my current role’s returns. I often wonder what the future holds if I strive to advance further in public Accounting. With the firm pulling back on promotions and hiring, along with a lackluster job market in industry roles, the road ahead seems particularly murky.

While I possess my CPA certification, I recognize that my experience may not make me the most appealing candidate for opportunities in the public domain. I also find myself lacking in exposure to public companies, which has been a limiting factor in advancing my career.

This situation raises a critical question: should I continue to persevere in my current position for another year or two, with the hope of gaining more experience and potentially a promotion? Or is it time to explore transitioning to a different role or industry?

The dilemma is real, and I know I’m not alone. Many of us in the profession face similar crossroads, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty. This journey in public accounting is undoubtedly challenging, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and reflection.

In sharing my experience, I hope to connect with others who might be feeling the same or to provide a platform for discussion on how we can successfully navigate our careers in public accounting. Whether we decide to stay the course or take a leap into a new direction, it’s crucial that we weigh our options carefully and remain adaptable in this ever-evolving industry.
