Working in Audit can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when facing unexpected career hurdles. Recently, I experienced a setback when I wasn’t promoted to a senior position at my firm, which ranks among the top 10 in the industry. While I respect the decision made by management—acknowledging that my colleagues seem to have a stronger command of their roles than I do—I find myself grappling with uncertainty about my career path.

The mental demands of this profession are significant. Despite my dedication, often extending my workdays beyond 10 hours, I struggle to keep pace with the workload. This results in a concerning situation where I am putting in extra hours without yielding the productivity expected of me. With an annual salary of around $70,000 and a consistent schedule that requires 50-plus hours of work, I question the long-term viability of this role, especially as I contemplate what it would take to advance in public Accounting.

The climate within the firm is indicative of a broader trend in the industry, with many companies tightening their approach to promotions and hiring. The job market outside of public Accounting isn’t looking particularly robust either, leaving little room for optimism. While I proudly hold my CPA, I feel I lack the practical experience that would make me a competitive candidate for positions outside my current role. Moreover, my exposure to public companies is minimal, further complicating my situation.

As I reflect on my options, I face a dilemma: Should I remain in my current position for another year or two to build more experience, or is it time to seek a transition before the situation grows more challenging? Each choice seems fraught with its own set of obstacles and uncertainties.
