In today’s competitive job market, the path toward career advancement can be riddled with uncertainty and self-doubt. For professionals in the Audit field, particularly those employed at top firms, the pressures can be immense. Recently, I faced a setback when I learned that I had not been promoted to the senior position I was striving for. While I understand the decision, as my peers demonstrated a stronger grasp of the role, it has left me questioning my future in this demanding field.
Working long hours—often exceeding ten a day—has become the norm for me, yet I find it challenging to produce a full day’s worth of work. As a result, I often feel overwhelmed and exhausted, regularly clocking over 50 hours a week for a salary around $70,000. This equation doesn’t feel quite right, especially considering my commitment and the mental toll it takes.
Moreover, the current climate in the industry is troubling. Many firms are tightening their belts, cutting back on promotions and new hires, creating a ripple effect that leaves many aspiring professionals seeking advancement feeling stuck. On top of this, the market for positions in industry isn’t particularly robust either. Even though I’ve obtained my CPA, I find myself lacking the hands-on experience that would make me a desirable candidate.
