Wasn’t promoted to senior – struggling to see a path forward in this field.

Facing Career Crossroads in Public Accounting: Navigating Setbacks and Seeking Growth

In the competitive realm of auditing at a top-tier firm, encountering bumps in the road is not uncommon. Recently, I faced a significant setback when I was not promoted to a senior position—something I’ve been working towards diligently. While I can acknowledge and accept the firm’s decision, it has left me grappling with uncertainties about my role and future in this demanding field.

The truth is, the demands of my current role are intense and mentally taxing. I often find myself putting in more than ten hours a day, balancing the complexities of my responsibilities. Despite my dedication, I struggle to deliver the same output as some of my peers who seem to have a stronger command of the tasks at hand. The compensation of approximately $70,000 for a consistent 50-plus hour work week has me questioning the sustainability of this lifestyle. As I contemplate my future, I am mindful of what it would take to advance further in public Accounting and whether the rewards would justify the sacrifices.

To complicate matters further, the current landscape for promotions and hiring is tightening; this trend appears to be pervasive across the industry. Although I possess my CPA credential, I recognize that my limited experience—especially regarding public companies—may not make me an enticing candidate for potential employers.

This has led me to a pivotal question: Should I endure another year or two in my current position to gain more experience and potentially position myself for a future promotion, or is it time to pivot and explore new opportunities? The decision weighs heavily on me, as I strive to align my career ambitions with my personal well-being.

As I reflect on this juncture in my career, I realize I’m not alone in navigating these challenges. Many professionals in the field face similar dilemmas. Whether to persevere in a familiar setting or venture into uncharted territory is a choice that requires careful consideration. Ultimately, the goal is to find a path that not only fosters professional growth but also supports a healthier work-life balance.

To those in similar situations, I’d love to hear your thoughts: how do you manage career setbacks, and when do you know it’s time for a change?
