Wasn’t promoted to senior – struggling to see a path forward in this field.

Navigating Career Challenges: Finding a Path Forward in Audit

The journey in the world of professional auditing can often be fraught with challenges, particularly when it comes to career progression. I recently faced a significant hurdle in my career at a top 10 auditing firm—my promotion to senior auditor did not come through this year. While I understand that my performance might not have met the expectations set for advancement, the toll that this demanding role takes on mental health is becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Despite putting in extensive hours, often exceeding 10 a day, I find myself struggling to complete my workload efficiently. The reality of pouring over 50 hours a week into a position that offers a salary of around $70,000 is disheartening. The thought of attempting to climb the corporate ladder within public Accounting feels overwhelming, especially when faced with the possibility of even greater demands.

The current climate within my firm and the broader job market indicates a trend of reduced promotions and hiring, a situation that seems common across many organizations. With my CPA in hand, I still feel underqualified due to my lack of experience, particularly in working with public companies. This raises a critical question: should I continue to endure my current role, hoping that perseverance will lead to future opportunities, or is it time to explore different avenues altogether?

As I reflect on my career trajectory, I am faced with the realization that the path forward might require a reevaluation of my circumstances. Transitioning to industry roles could be more beneficial, yet the fear of venturing into the unknown creates hesitation. It’s a delicate balance of weighing the comfort of familiarity against the potential for growth in a different environment.

Ultimately, this situation has prompted me to consider what truly aligns with my career aspirations. Whether I choose to remain in Audit for a while longer or embark on a new journey, I recognize the importance of making a decision that will lead to professional fulfillment. The road ahead may be unclear, but with careful consideration, it’s possible to carve out a path that not only addresses my current frustrations but also sets the stage for future success.
