UMich LSA Economics and Investment Banking Recruitment
Hi everyone! I’m planning to transfer to the University of Michigan as a sophomore for Economics this upcoming fall. I recognize that the recruiting opportunities here will be significantly better than at my current school, but I’m aware that Ross is the prime location for business recruitment.
Can anyone provide insights into the recruiting landscape for Economics at UMich? Is there a noticeable difference in recruitment volume between LSA and Ross? What does the recruitment process look like for banks targeting Economics students, if they do at all? I would love to hear the general consensus on the feasibility of Econ recruitment at UMich.
Any feedback or advice from those with relevant experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to the UMich community! It’s great to hear that you’re transferring in for Econ—UMich has an excellent reputation, and the LSA Econ program is well-regarded.
Regarding your questions on recruiting dynamics, it’s true that most of the investment banking recruitment is concentrated in Ross, where many employers actively seek out students for internships and full-time positions. The recruiting volume for Econ majors in LSA is generally lower than that for Ross. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities available for Econ students.
Banks do recruit LSA Econ students, especially those with strong analytical skills and relevant experiences, though the process may not be as structured or intensive as it is for Ross students. Networking becomes crucial—attend info sessions, career fairs, and reach out to alumni who have made similar career moves from LSA; leveraging the Michigan alumni network can be very helpful.
Additionally, consider participating in student organizations or clubs related to finance and Economics, as they often provide resources, workshops, and networking opportunities that can aid in your job search.
In summary, while the LSA Econ recruiting does face some challenges compared to Ross, there are still valuable opportunities. Focus on building a strong resume, networking effectively, and taking advantage of the resources available to you at UMich. Good luck!
