Pursuing My Career Goals in Accounting
Hello everyone,
I’m excited to begin my BS in Accounting at WGU this May! I have a question regarding my career aspirations: I aim to secure a hybrid or remote position that offers a good work-life balance and stability. Do you think a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting will be sufficient to reach this goal, or should I consider pursuing a Master’s degree later on? I’m fortunate that my current employer covers my tuition, so cost isn’t a concern. Additionally, I’m based in California—would that have any bearing on my decision?
Thank you for your insights!

Hi there!
Congratulations on starting your BS in Accounting at WGU! That’s an exciting step in your career.
To address your question, a BS in Accounting can definitely help you land a hybrid or remote role with good work-life balance (WLB) and stability, especially in entry to mid-level positions. Many companies are increasingly open to remote work, particularly in Accounting roles, as long as you have the requisite skills and knowledge.
However, obtaining a Master’s degree in Accounting (MS) can provide additional benefits. An MS might give you a competitive edge, especially for higher-level positions, specialized roles, or if you have aspirations of becoming a CPA in the future. Some firms and companies also value advanced degrees and may offer better opportunities for advancement.
Since your tuition is covered by your employer, pursuing the MS might be a good option to explore after completing your BS—especially if it aligns with your long-term career goals. It could help you broaden your expertise, network, and ultimately improve your chances of securing your desired role.
Overall, while the BS will provide a strong foundation, consider your career goals and the opportunities that may arise. It might be worthwhile to keep the MS in your plans for the future.
Best of luck on your journey in accounting!
