Transitioning out of IB/PE and into a different industry?

Considering a Transition from IB/PE to a New Industry?

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone here has made the jump from investment banking or private equity to a different industry or role. If you have, I’d love to hear about where you are now and what motivated your transition.

For a bit of background, I’m currently based in Southeast Asia and spent about four years as an investment banking associate. For the past year, I’ve been working at a global infrastructure fund in the same region. However, I must admit that I’m not particularly passionate about my current position and find the tasks—like financial modeling and preparing investment committee decks—less enjoyable. I’ve come to realize that I’m not really interested in continuing within this industry.

I’m actively exploring alternative career paths outside of IB/PE and would appreciate any insights from those who have gone through a similar experience. What roles have you transitioned into? Thank you!

  1. Hi there!

I totally understand where you’re coming from—transitioning out of IB/PE can be a big decision, especially when you’re looking for something more fulfilling. There are several paths you could consider based on your experience and interests.

    1. Corporate Strategy/Development: Many IB/PE professionals transition into corporate roles, focusing on strategy or business development at larger firms. This can leverage your skills in financial analysis while offering a different work environment and a chance to get involved in broader business strategy.

    2. Consulting: If you enjoy problem-solving but want to step away from finance, a role in management consulting might be a good fit. It utilizes analytical skills and has a variety of industry exposure without being tied down to financial modeling.

    3. Venture Capital or Startups: If you’re inclined towards innovation, consider moving into venture capital or working at a startup. This realm often values the analytical skills you’ve honed in IB/PE while also allowing for a more dynamic work environment.

    4. Tech Companies: There’s a high demand for people with financial acumen in tech firms, especially in roles related to product management, operations, or business analysis. This could also offer a bit of a cultural shift if you’re looking for a different work atmosphere.

    5. NGOs or Impact Investing: If your interest leans toward social impact, NGOs or impact investing roles can be fulfilling and allow you to use your finance skills for a greater cause.

    6. Education or Training: If you enjoy mentorship, moving into education or training sectors, whether as a corporate trainer or even teaching finance courses, can be a rewarding path.

Consider reaching out to alumni, professionals in roles that interest you, or even explore online networking platforms to learn more about different industries. Each transition is unique, so finding the right fit that aligns with your passions and skills will make the journey worthwhile. Good luck!
