The Importance of Timing and Longevity in the Investment Field
A few years ago, I found myself inadvertently stepping into the role of an Investment Advisor, transitioning from my previous job as a translator for a government agency.
In my experience, relationship management constitutes about 80% of my role, while calendar management takes up another 10% and knowledge fits in the remaining 10% (though I may be exaggerating). Initially, I was anxious as I navigated this new career path, but I quickly discovered several key insights:
-
Many advisors seem to rely on a mix of charm and a basic level of knowledge to remain in the industry. In the independent contractor space, a surprising number appear to be somewhat complacent.
-
For the first two years, my hard work focused less on expanding my client base and more on gaining expertise and outlasting others in the field. Eventually, as seasoned advisors left or retired, their clients naturally gravitated toward me.
-
Clients appreciate my honesty in admitting that I don’t have all the answers; however, I ensure I’m well-connected within the company to find the right individuals who do.
I might be incredibly fortunate, or perhaps this role is precisely what I was meant for—I suspect it could be a bit of both.
In my relatively short tenure, I have advanced from a junior advisor to the lead trainer by my third year, and now, heading into my fourth year, I’m stepping into the position of Branch Manager.
While I know many, myself included, often lament the long hours and demanding nature of this work, I firmly believe in the wisdom imparted to me during my first year by a senior advisor: “Each year you invest here will be the most lucrative you’ve ever experienced.”
