This is the worst job market I’ve ever been in, and I’m starting to really worry about when I’ll find my next job.

Navigating the Toughest Job Market: A Personal Journey

In recent times, the job market has reached levels of difficulty that many of us have never encountered before. This situation has left me feeling anxious and uncertain about my next steps in finding employment.

With approximately seven years of experience under my belt—including over three years at a prestigious top 10 public Accounting firm—I had always felt confident in my ability to secure a new position when needed. My decision to leave my previous job was not made lightly; the work environment had become toxic and conflicting, leaving me with no choice but to prioritize my mental well-being. For the first time in my career, I entered the job market without another role lined up, which was both daunting and liberating.

In an effort to enhance my qualifications, I decided to concentrate on obtaining my CPA certification. Additionally, I’ve been fortunate to engage in freelance Accounting work with a company I previously collaborated with, which helped bridge some of the financial gaps. However, just as I neared the completion of my CPA, my job search began—and it has been nothing short of frustrating.

In the past, landing a job interview was hardly a concern for me. Yet now, I find that an overwhelming majority of my job applications—nearly 99%—have resulted in rejection letters. Each day, I diligently submit applications, hoping for even one interview opportunity. So far, I’ve managed to secure an interview with only one company. Unfortunately, after reaching the final stages of the hiring process, I learned that they opted to reassign the work internally instead of progressing with external hires. This was particularly frustrating given the weeks of delays in scheduling interviews and the tardiness displayed during our first meeting.

The struggle continued when I applied for other roles that I met all the qualifications for. In one case, a recruiter contacted me praising my impressive background but informed me that the company preferred candidates with five years of experience or less—despite my seven years providing a strong and relevant foundation. Similarly, another opportunity arose that mirrored my work at the top 10 firm perfectly; however, the recruiter ultimately chose not to submit my application because the company requested candidates exclusively with Big Four experience.

It’s incredibly disheartening to encounter these obstacles, especially when I know I possess a strong skill set and have consistently delivered exceptional results in my roles. Never did I imagine this job search would prove to be such a monumental challenge.

As I share my experience, I hope to connect with others who
