Exploring Self-Study Options—Any Recommendations?
Hello everyone,
I hope you’re doing well! I’m a 23-year-old from the UK and recently graduated with a first in physiotherapy about eight months ago. Unfortunately, due to the current situation in the NHS, I’ve been unable to secure a job as a physiotherapist, which has led me to contemplate a career change.
I also hold an HND in business Economics and found the Accounting and finance modules particularly engaging. Additionally, I’ve had a couple of weeks of work experience in an accounts department during my time at university, and I enjoy watching finance lectures in my free time.
I’m thinking about self-studying for the ACCA qualification, but I wanted to hear your thoughts before I dive in. Would you recommend pursuing a career in Accounting? And how is the job market for accountants at the moment?
Any insights or advice you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there!
It sounds like you’re at a pivotal point in your career journey. Self-studying, especially for something like the ACCA, can be a great option if you’re motivated and disciplined. Many people have successfully transitioned into Accounting after starting out in different fields, so you’re definitely not alone in this!
Here are a few things to consider:
Job Market: The job market for accountants varies by region and sector, but generally, there is a consistent demand for qualified accountants. With your background and additional qualifications like ACCA, you should have a solid foundation to enter the field. Keep an eye on job boards and talk to professionals in the industry to get a sense of local opportunities.
Benefits of ACCA: The ACCA is well-respected and can open doors to a variety of career paths in finance and Accounting. It offers a comprehensive understanding of financial principles and practices that can be quite beneficial in various roles.
Self-Studying: Self-study can be quite flexible, allowing you to learn at your own pace and fit it around your life. However, make sure you’re prepared for the disciplined approach it requires. Setting specific goals, having a study plan, and possibly joining a study group can help keep you on track.
Networking: Don’t forget to network! Join Accounting forums, attend workshops/webinars, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Building relationships in the industry can help you learn more and may open up job opportunities down the line.
Consider Your Passion: Since you’ve enjoyed the accounting and finance modules in your previous studies, it sounds like you have a genuine interest in the field. Following that passion can lead to a fulfilling career.
Overall, if you feel excited about the prospect of accounting and are willing to put in the work to self-study, I’d say go for it! Best of luck on your journey, and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
