Seeking Advice on Strategic Professional Exams
Hello everyone,
I’m currently working in practice and have been gaining valuable experience over the past few years. However, I haven’t attempted any of the Strategic Professional papers yet since I was granted exemptions through my degree.
Given the current job market and potential career prospects, I’ve realized that I need to either start tackling these papers or consider switching to a different industry, as the compensation isn’t aligning with my efforts. The most straightforward path for advancement seems to be to begin studying for these exams.
At this time, I cannot enroll in classes for these papers, so I’m reaching out for advice.
What’s the easiest paper to start with for independent study? I’ve heard that SBL is a good starting point, followed by SBR. If anyone has successfully passed these papers, I would love to hear about your study methods.
Additionally, if anyone has insights on how my experience in practice and partial ACCA qualification might translate into opportunities outside of Accounting, I’d appreciate your input. I’m open to exploring other options.
Thank you!

Hi there!
It sounds like you’re at a pivotal point in your career, and it’s great that you’re considering taking the Strategic Professional Exams! Here’s some advice based on what you’ve shared.
Choosing a Paper: Many candidates find that starting with Strategic Business Leadership (SBL) is a good choice. It integrates elements of both strategy and management, which can be beneficial in a real-world context and allows you to leverage your practical experience. Furthermore, since SBL covers a broad range of topics, it can give you a solid foundation for the other Strategic Professional papers. After SBL, you might consider Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) as it builds on your knowledge of financial reporting.
Self-Study Methods: Since you’re looking to self-study, here are a few methods that have worked for others:
Mock Exams: Take mock exams under timed conditions to prepare yourself for the actual exam day.
Opportunities Outside of Accountancy: Your experience in practice, combined with your ACCA qualification, can open up various doors outside of traditional accountancy roles. Here are a few possibilities:
Take your time to explore and see what resonates with you. Good luck with your preparations, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support from the community as you embark on this journey!
Best of luck!
