Sorry but we don’t have a chart of accounts, we’ve evolved past that.

The Evolution of Accounting: Do We Really Need a Chart of Accounts Anymore?

Recently, while taking on a side project with a company, I encountered an interesting situation that made me reflect on the evolution of Accounting practices. When I inquired about their chart of accounts, they responded with a surprising statement: they don’t use a chart of accounts at all, claiming they have “evolved past it.”

At first, I couldn’t help but chuckle. The idea of moving beyond a foundational element of Accounting seemed baffling to me. In traditional accounting frameworks, the chart of accounts serves as a crucial organizational tool, outlining the various accounts used to categorize financial transactions. So, hearing that this company had dismissed it entirely piqued my curiosity.

As the conversation progressed, they explained their reliance on Workday ERP, which operates using a system referred to as “worktags” rather than conventional accounts. For those unfamiliar, worktags function as flexible identifiers that can be applied to various transactions, enabling detailed tracking and reporting without conforming to a fixed structure like a traditional chart of accounts. They even offered to schedule a meeting for more detailed insights into this approach.

My response was light-hearted but sincere: “Could you just provide me with a chart of worktags then?” After all, a system based on tags instead of accounts still needs some form of organization, doesn’t it?

This experience left me pondering the implications of evolving accounting systems. Many organizations are adopting more integrated technology solutions that challenge conventional methodologies. However, it raises an essential question: can we fully abandon traditional accounting structures, or is there merit in maintaining some of these foundational tools?
