Subject: Seeking Guidance for a Career in Investment Banking, Private Equity, or Hedge Funds
Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out for advice as I just completed my Class 12 boards in India and will be taking the CUET in May to pursue a B.Com (Hons) at Delhi University. My goal is to enter the fields of Investment Banking, Private Equity, or Hedge Funds.
I’m a bit lost on where to start. I’ve heard that pursuing a CA or an MBA is important, and that the CFA is often regarded as a valuable certification. I have a strong preference for obtaining an MBA abroad, which would require work experience. Ideally, I would like to relocate for work in Hong Kong or Singapore.
If there are any seniors or professionals out there who could provide guidance on how to begin this journey and what key considerations I should keep in mind, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you!

Hi there! It’s great that you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in your career. Here are some steps and tips to help you navigate your path towards investment banking (IB), private equity (PE), or hedge funds (HF):
CA vs. MBA: Chartered Accountancy (CA) is a rigorous program and provides a strong understanding of finance and Accounting, which is valuable in IB and PE. An MBA, especially from a reputed school abroad, is also a significant stepping stone into IB, PE, or HF. Many professionals opt for CA followed by an MBA.
Certifications:
Consider pursuing internships in finance-related areas to gain practical experience and insights.
Internships and Work Experience:
Aim for internships in roles related to finance, analysis, or business development as they will strengthen your application for an MBA later.
Networking:
Join finance clubs or organizations in your college to meet like-minded individuals and gain insights from guest speakers.
Postgraduate Options:
Some programs allow for “pre-experience” or those that do not necessarily require work experience, so explore all your options.
Skills Development:
Develop your communication skills, both written and verbal, as they are critical in client-facing roles.
Global Considerations:
Consider language skills that might help you in these markets.
Stay Updated:
In summary, focus on your education, gain relevant experience through internships, build your network, and continuously develop your skills. The competition in these fields is tough, but with the right preparation and dedication, you can carve a successful path. Best of luck, and don’t hesitate to reach out for more specific questions along the way!
