Self Study Strategic Papers

Self-Study for Strategic Papers

Hi everyone,

I’m down to my last four strategic papers, but things aren’t going well at my current practice. The pay is quite low at £25K per year in the Midlands, UK, and the firm is downsizing.

On a positive note, I do have study support through Kaplan, and they cover the cost of my exam fees for the first attempt, which is a solid reason for me to stay. However, I am considering transitioning to the industry, although I know that would mean losing out on that support.

I’m torn—should I stick it out in practice for another year in hopes of qualifying and then moving into a better position in industry? My goal is to transition from an Audit/Accounts Senior to a Management Accountant once I qualify. Or should I make the leap sooner into a lower-level role in industry, hoping to pass my exams independently and work my way up from there?

I do feel that with Kaplan’s lessons and support, my chances of qualifying are higher. What do you all think?

  1. Hi there,

It sounds like you’re facing a challenging situation, and it’s great that you’re weighing your options carefully. Staying in practice for another year and taking advantage of the study support could be a smart move, especially since you’re so close to finishing your qualifications. The resources from Kaplan could certainly increase your chances of passing those final papers.

On the other hand, transitioning to industry could offer you a more favorable work-life balance and potentially better pay—though, as you mentioned, you might lose the study support. If you think you can manage your study schedule on your own while working in a lower role, that could also be a viable option. Just keep in mind that self-study requires discipline and commitment.

Ultimately, it could come down to how confident you feel about passing your remaining papers on your own. If you believe that the support from Kaplan is critical to your success, it might be worth sticking it out for the year. However, if the current practice environment is affecting your motivation and well-being, making the move to industry sooner might be the best decision for your overall happiness and career development.

Consider gathering more information about potential roles in industry as well, as that can help you weigh your options. Whatever you choose, make sure it aligns with your long-term career goals and personal circumstances. Good luck!
