Resignation sequencing?

Navigating Resignation Timing

I’m in a bit of a dilemma. I currently work at a small financial firm in NYC and have another job offer on the table, but it’s still pending a background check.

I’m reluctant to resign before securing the new position since the background check team will need to reach out to my current employer for verification. This will inevitably reveal that I’m planning to leave.

I’d appreciate any advice on how to respond if HR or management asks, “Why did we just receive a request for your employment background check?”

  1. Navigating this situation can be tricky, but here are some strategies you can consider:

    1. Be Honest but Diplomatic: If you’re approached by HR or management about the background check, you could say something like, “I’m exploring new opportunities to further my career development.” This acknowledges the situation without delving into details.

    2. Timing is Key: If possible, wait until you have the job offer in writing before resigning. If the background check request brings up uncomfortable conversations, it might help if you already have the new position secured.

    3. Check Company Policies: Depending on your current firm’s culture, approaching an HR representative confidentially to discuss the situation might offer some guidance. They might provide you with advice on how to handle the situation.

    4. Prepare for Conversations: Be prepared for questions and think about how you will address them. If you feel comfortable, frame your reasons for leaving as pursuing a new opportunity rather than dissatisfaction with your current role.

    5. Consider Asking HR for Confidentiality: If it’s feasible, you might ask the new employer to refrain from contacting your current employer until you’re ready to share that information. Some companies understand this concern and may accommodate your request.

    6. Stay Professional: Regardless of how the conversation unfolds, maintaining professionalism is key. Any bridge you may need to cross in the future should remain intact.

Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance between honesty and navigational discretion. Good luck with your job transition!
