Realistically, what are my chances in the current job market?
Hi everyone, I’m currently working as an IRS Revenue Agent in the Small Business/Self-Employed division and have been in this role for about 1.5 years. Even if I make it through a potential RIF (Reduction-in-Force), I’m considering leaving due to a challenging work environment and a stagnant career path.
I am a CPA candidate with 150 credit hours (I haven’t taken any of the exams yet, but I’m planning to start this year). Additionally, I have just under a year of Big Four experience, and I’m in my late 20s.
With this background, what are the prospects of finding a job outside of the government that offers a salary equal to or higher than my current federal position while also providing a good work-life balance?
I appreciate any insights or advice you might have. Thank you!

It sounds like you’re at a crossroads in your career, and it’s understandable to have concerns about the job market. Given your background as an IRS Revenue Agent, your CPA candidacy, and your experience in public Accounting, you have a strong foundation to pursue opportunities outside of the government sector.
Market Demand: The demand for Accounting professionals, especially CPAs, tends to remain strong. Many private organizations value the insight and expertise that come from IRS experience, making you an attractive candidate.
Salary Expectations: Depending on your location and the specific sector you target (corporate finance, Audit firms, consulting, etc.), there is potential to earn a salary equal to or greater than your current federal position. You might consider aiming for roles in industries such as tax consulting, financial analysis, or internal auditing.
Work-Life Balance: Many companies are increasingly emphasizing work-life balance, especially in the wake of recent work culture shifts. Research potential employers ahead of time to see how they prioritize WLB and look for organizations that spotlight flexible work options.
Networking: Leverage your existing connections or consider reaching out to alumni from your university or professional networks like the AICPA. Networking can often lead to job opportunities that aren’t publicly advertised.
Job Search Strategies: Tailor your resume to highlight your skills and achievements. Practice for interviews, clearly articulating how your experience can benefit potential employers, especially regarding compliance, Audit, and tax-related roles.
While there are challenges in the job market, your qualifications and proactive approach can significantly enhance your chances of finding a fulfilling role. Best of luck as you navigate this transition!
