Title: Starting Your Career in finance: The Importance of Menial Jobs
I often see recent graduates entering the finance industry expecting to land prestigious roles right out of college, only to be disappointed with entry-level positions. It’s important to remember that many successful finance professionals started in mundane jobs and worked their way up. It’s okay if your first job isn’t glamorous – it’s all part of the journey to your ultimate goal.
Experienced professionals: What were some of the menial jobs you started your finance career with? Share your journey to help others ease their anxiety about their career paths.
For example, my first job after college was verifying employment at a mortgage company. Now, I work in Private Wealth Management as a senior portfolio trader. Remember, everyone starts somewhere – keep working towards your goals.

My Journey in Finance
When I first entered the finance industry, my job was far from glamorous. I started off working at a mortgage company doing verifications of employment. My daily tasks involved calling various workplaces to confirm that the individuals applying for a mortgage were indeed employed there and in good standing.
Although this job may have seemed menial at the time, it provided me with valuable experience and a foot in the door of the finance world. I did not let this entry-level position discourage me from my long-term goals. Instead, I used it as a stepping stone to work my way up the career ladder.
Fast forward to today, I am proud to say that I am now a senior portfolio trader in Private Wealth Management. Over the years, I have gained knowledge, skills, and expertise that have helped me climb the ranks and excel in my field.
My journey serves as a reminder that success in finance is not always instantaneous. It takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance to reach your desired career goals. So to all the aspiring finance professionals out there, do not be disheartened if your first job is not what you envisioned. Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, and keep pushing towards your ultimate objective. Your hard work will pay off in the long run.
