Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Navigating the Job Market: Insights on Breaking into Public Accounting Without Local Credentials

Hello, fellow finance enthusiasts,

I find myself reaching out to this community hoping to gather some insights and advice. Recently, I achieved a significant milestone by passing all sections of the CPA exam and accumulating 150 credits. My professional background includes experience as a Financial Analyst and an Operations Analyst within the logistics sector, where I honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I’m proficient in working with data, particularly in Excel and Power BI.

My intention is to transition into public Accounting as part of my long-term goal to establish myself in the U.S. Currently, I’m residing in Texas and am eager to embark on this new phase of my career. However, I am encountering significant challenges in my job search.

Many firms in the area seem to have strict requirements, including:

  • A degree in Accounting from an accredited U.S. institution
  • A minimum of one year of experience in public accounting

Unfortunately, I lack both of these qualifications, which has dampened my chances of securing interviews. Despite my willingness to accept positions around the $60,000 mark and my openness to relocation, progress has been slow.

Considering my current situation—especially with dependent support in mind—pursuing a master’s degree isn’t a feasible option at this time. Therefore, I would like to hear from anyone who has navigated a similar path.

Your experiences and insights into breaking into public accounting without local credentials or direct experience would be incredibly valuable to me. How did you manage this transition? Any practical tips or resources you could recommend? Thank you in advance for your support!
