Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Navigating the Job Market: Transitioning into Public Accounting After Passing the CPA Exam

Hello, readers!

Today, we’re diving into a common dilemma faced by many finance professionals who are eager to transition into public Accounting. After successfully passing the CPA exam and building a solid background in analytics and financial planning and analysis (FP&A), the journey to land that coveted role can feel overwhelming—especially if you’re missing certain prerequisites.

My Background

I recently achieved a significant milestone by obtaining my CPA certification. With 150 college credits under my belt, I’ve honed my analytical skills through roles as a Financial Analyst and Operations Analyst within the logistics sector. My experience has largely revolved around extensive planning, reporting, and managing data, leading to strong proficiency in tools like Excel and Power BI.

The Challenge Ahead

Having transitioned to Texas in pursuit of a long-term career in public Accounting, I encountered a stark reality. Many firms I’ve approached have stringent hiring criteria:

  • They typically require a U.S. accounting degree.
  • Most demand at least one year of public accounting experience.

Regrettably, I do not meet these requirements, resulting in a striking lack of interview opportunities.

Despite being flexible with my job expectations (I would consider positions around $60K) and open to relocation—even small, local CPA firms—I find myself at an impasse. Moreover, pursuing a master’s degree is not feasible for me at the moment since I have a dependent to support.

Seeking Guidance from the Community

This situation has prompted me to reach out to others who may have encountered similar hurdles. I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully navigated a transition into public accounting without local credentials or experience. Your insights and advice on how to break through this barrier would be invaluable.

If you’ve managed to secure a position against the odds, I’d greatly appreciate your tips. Whether it’s networking strategies, resume enhancements, or specific firms that offer opportunities for those looking to break into the field, every piece of advice counts!

Let’s collaborate to tackle this challenge together. Thank you for your support!
