Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Overcoming Barriers to Break into Public Accounting: Seeking Guidance

Hello, fellow finance enthusiasts!

I’m excited to share that I’ve recently passed all sections of the CPA exam and hold 150 credits. My professional background encompasses roles as a Financial Analyst and an Operations Analyst in the logistics sector, where I’ve honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. With strong proficiency in data analytics tools like Excel and Power BI, I feel well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

Recently, I’ve decided to shift my career focus towards public Accounting as part of a long-term goal to establish my life in the U.S., specifically in Texas. However, this transition has proven more challenging than I had anticipated.

Many Accounting firms have strict requirements that I currently don’t meet. They often look for candidates with:

  • A U.S.-based accounting degree
  • At least one year of experience in public accounting

Unfortunately, I lack both of these qualifications, which has made it difficult for me to secure interviews.

I’m quite flexible regarding job opportunities, willing to accept a position with a salary around $60,000, and am open to relocating within the state for the right local CPA firm. Pursuing a master’s degree isn’t a viable option for me right now, as I have responsibilities to support a dependent.

Has anyone here faced a similar situation? I would greatly appreciate any advice or insights on how to break into public accounting despite lacking local credentials and relevant experience. Your guidance could be instrumental in helping me navigate this hurdle on my career path!
