Passed CPA Exam, Have Analytics + FP&A Background, but No One Will Interview Me – What Can I Do?

Overcoming Barriers: Breaking into Public Accounting After Passing the CPA Exam

Navigating the job market can be daunting, especially after achieving a significant milestone like passing the CPA exam. Recently, I found myself in a challenging situation that many may relate to: despite having cleared all sections of the CPA, holding 150 credit hours, and possessing a robust background in finance, my prospects for securing interviews in public Accounting seem bleak.

My previous experiences include serving as a Financial Analyst and an Operations Analyst in the logistics sector, where I honed my skills in planning, reporting, and data management. I have developed a solid proficiency in tools like Excel and Power BI, which I believed would be valuable in my transition to public Accounting. After relocating to Texas with the intent of establishing a long-term career in this field, I encountered unexpected challenges.

The primary hurdle appears to be the common requirements set by many firms: a U.S. accounting degree and at least one year of public accounting experience. Unfortunately, my qualifications do not meet these criteria, which has made it increasingly difficult to even land an interview, despite my eagerness and willingness to accept a position with a starting salary around $60K or even consider relocating for opportunities.

Moreover, pursuing a master’s program to enhance my credentials isn’t feasible at this point, as I have a dependent to support.

I’m reaching out to the community for advice and guidance. Have any of you navigated a similar transition into public accounting without traditional local qualifications? What strategies did you employ to break into the industry? Any insights or shared experiences would be immensely helpful as I continue my job search.

Thank you for your support!
