Parents, how do you juggle work, family, and studying for ACCA exams?
My son is almost one, and in the three years since I became a member, I’ve only managed to complete five papers. I’ve had to take several breaks due to work and family responsibilities, but I’m aiming to finish the remaining eight papers over the next two to three years.
I would appreciate any tips on balancing everything!
On a side note, I’ve attempted the FR paper five times and unfortunately haven’t passed yet; my last attempt was about a year ago.

Balancing work, family, and studying for ACCA papers can be incredibly challenging, especially with a young child! Here are some tips that might help you manage everything more effectively:
Set Realistic Goals: It’s great that you have a plan to finish your remaining 8 papers in the next 2 to 3 years. Break this down into smaller, achievable goals. For instance, aim to complete one paper every few months, and adjust as needed based on your workload and family commitments.
Create a Study Schedule: Find pockets of time during your week to dedicate to studying. Early mornings or late evenings, after your child goes to bed, might work well. Consistency is key, so try to stick to the schedule as much as possible.
Utilize Study Resources: There are many resources available, such as online courses, study groups, and exam prep materials. Consider looking for focused revision courses or coaching specifically for the papers you find challenging, like Financial Reporting (FR).
Involve Your Family: Communicate with your family about your study needs. They might be able to offer support by giving you some dedicated study time or helping with child care while you focus on your studies.
Break Study Sessions: Since your attention might be divided, try breaking up your study sessions into shorter, more manageable blocks of time. Even 30-45 minutes can be effective if you are focused and organized.
Prioritize Self-Care: It can be easy to forget about your own well-being while juggling responsibilities. Ensure you’re getting enough rest, nutrition, and some personal downtime. Taking care of yourself will ultimately make you more effective in all areas of your life.
Join Support Groups: Connecting with other parents who are also studying may provide encouragement and practical tips. Online forums or local ACCA study groups can be a great way to find support.
Reflect on Study Techniques: If you’ve struggled with FR multiple times, consider reassessing your study methods. It may help to try different approaches, such as watching tutorial videos, joining a study group, or employing flashcards for difficult concepts.
Stay Positive and Flexible: Remember that it’s okay to adjust your plans as needed. Parenting and working can be unpredictable, so maintaining a positive mindset and being flexible with your study goals can help reduce stress.
Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate each step forward you make, whether that’s completing a paper, mastering a difficult topic, or simply finding a routine that works for you.
You’ve got a lot on your plate, but with focused effort and support, you can achieve your ACCA goals while being a wonderful parent. Good luck!
