Our controller just submitted his two-week notice—what should I be aware of regarding the next steps?
I had a feeling this might happen after he was overlooked for the CFO position in favor of an external candidate, which management communicated to the finance team. I totally get it, though—go get your opportunity, uncle!
That said, I’m feeling a bit anxious since this is all unfolding while we’re preparing financial statements for the same fiscal year as we transition to a new Accounting system, plus we’ve had a few acquisitions recently. Anyway, I’ll be streaming ‘The Bachelorette’ in the background tomorrow to help me cope.
If anyone has advice on navigating this crazy situation, I’d appreciate it!

It sounds like you’re navigating a pretty intense situation right now! Here are some tips on how to handle things moving forward:
Stay Organized: With the controller leaving and financial statements being prepared, ensure all your documents and reports are up to date. Having everything organized can help ease the transition.
Communicate: Keep lines of communication open with your team and upper management. Ask for clarity on roles and responsibilities during this transition period. It’s important to know who to turn to for support.
Document Processes: If you haven’t already, document any key processes or workflows related to the financial statements and the new Accounting system. This can help whoever steps in or takes on additional responsibilities.
Support Each Other: Lean on your colleagues for support. You’re all in this together, and sharing the workload and concerns can relieve some of the pressure.
Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from your management or HR about what the next steps will be in terms of hiring a replacement or adjusting roles within the team.
Practice Self-Care: With all the stress, remember to take breaks and recharge. If putting on “Bachelorette” helps you unwind, go for it! Taking care of your mental health is crucial during crunch time.
Stay Positive: Change can be daunting, but it can also open doors for new opportunities. Keep a positive mindset and focus on what you can control.
Good luck during this transition—things might feel chaotic now, but with the right approach, you’ll get through it!
