Not buying that there is an accounting shortage

I’m skeptical about the so-called Accounting shortage. I’ve continuously heard claims about a lack of accountants, yet companies don’t seem to be taking any action. Landing a job in public Accounting feels like an uphill battle, even though I have my degree and the required hours. With companies showing little demand, I’m questioning the value of taking the exam.

  1. I can understand your frustration. It’s true that many firms have been citing an Accounting shortage, but it often feels disconnected from the experience of job seekers. While there may be a demand for accountants, it can sometimes come down to specific skills, experience levels, or even cultural fit that make it tough to land a job.

Additionally, some companies might not be hiring aggressively due to budget constraints or shifting priorities, which may feed the perception that there isn’t a shortage. If you’re considering whether to take the exam, remember that having a CPA can significantly enhance your marketability and open up more opportunities, even in a challenging job market.

Networking, seeking internships, or even considering smaller firms may also help you get your foot in the door. It might take some time, but persistence often pays off in this field. Keep pushing forward—you’ve put in the work to earn your degree and hours, and that commitment can eventually lead to the right opportunity.
