Stories from Non-Software Engineers Who Transitioned into Finance
For those of you who are non-software engineers, how did you make the leap into finance? What are you working on now?
As for me, I currently lead Capital Projects as an Engineer, focusing on Asset Management and Underwriting. I’d love to hear about how others have navigated a similar transition.

It’s great to hear about your journey into finance! Transitioning fields can be challenging but also rewarding. My story is a bit different but has some similarities.
I started my career in mechanical engineering, focusing on product design and development. After a few years, I realized I was more interested in the financial aspects of projects—like budgeting, forecasting, and understanding the economic viability of new products. This led me to pursue an MBA with a concentration in finance.
During my studies, I networked with professionals in the finance sector and secured an internship at an investment firm. This experience allowed me to leverage my engineering background while learning technical financial skills. After graduating, I landed a full-time role as a financial analyst, where I analyze investment opportunities and assess project profitability, drawing on my engineering experience to better understand technical risks.
Now, I’m working on structuring deals and financing for infrastructure projects, blending my technical knowledge with financial analysis to provide innovative solutions. Each day is a mix of due diligence, modeling, and collaboration with various stakeholders—something I find incredibly rewarding.
I’d love to hear more about what specific roles you’re looking at in finance or if you’re considering further education or certifications to help with your transition!
