Exploring New Career Paths
Has anyone here transitioned away from Accounting successfully? I’m currently a senior accountant at a med tech company, but I’m on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) and I feel like my time in this role might be coming to an end.
I’m not a CPA, but I’ve enjoyed working in IT and learning about it. I’d love to hear any advice you might have!
Are there jobs out there where my skills could be valuable, particularly in other business or analyst roles? Thanks in advance for your help!

It’s great that you’re considering a new direction for your career, especially if you’ve found an interest in IT! There are definitely ways to leverage your Accounting background and analytical skills in other fields. Here are a few suggestions:
Data Analyst or Business Analyst: Many companies value the analytical skills that accountants possess. You could look into roles that require data analysis, where your experience with financial data could be a strong asset. Consider acquiring some skills in data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI, and familiarize yourself with SQL as it’s often a requirement.
Financial Analyst: This role often blends Accounting with a more strategic approach to finance. You’d be analyzing trends, preparing reports, and offering insights to help guide business decisions. Your current experience can provide a solid foundation for stepping into this area.
IT Auditor: Since you have an interest in IT, roles that blend IT with finance, like IT auditing, might be worth exploring. IT auditors assess the systems and processes in place to ensure compliance and efficiency, which could suit your skill set well.
Project Management: If you’re interested in overseeing projects, consider pursuing certifications in project management (like PMP). Your background in Accounting could be beneficial in managing budgets and financial planning for projects.
Consulting: Management or financial consulting could also be a pathway. You could help businesses improve their financial processes, IT infrastructure, or overall performance, using your accounting background while leaning on your interest in IT.
Further Education or Certifications: Consider online courses or certifications in analytics, IT systems, or project management that could make you more competitive in these roles.
Networking is also key—reach out to professionals in the fields you’re interested in on platforms like LinkedIn, and attend industry meetups or seminars. You might find opportunities and get insights into how others made similar transitions.
Remember, many people successfully transition into new careers by highlighting transferable skills and staying open to learning. Good luck with your next steps!
