Network before interview?

Connecting Before the Interview?
I have a first-round interview at a firm I’m really excited about early next week. Is it inappropriate to reach out to other team members for a brief call or to network beforehand? Am I cutting it too close with the timeline?

If it’s appropriate, what questions should I ask? Should I mention my upcoming interview and express my desire to learn more about the firm?

  1. Reaching out to other members of the firm before your interview can be a great way to gather insights and show your enthusiasm for the position. It’s generally acceptable, especially if you approach it thoughtfully. Here are some tips on how to proceed:

    1. Messaging Approach: Start with a polite introduction. Mention your interest in the firm and your upcoming interview. Keep it concise and professional.

    2. Purpose of the Call: You could frame your request around wanting to learn more about the company culture, their experiences at the firm, or insights into the position you’re applying for. Express that you’re eager to gain a better understanding of what makes the firm unique.

    3. Questions to Ask:

    4. What do they enjoy most about working at the firm?
    5. How would they describe the company culture?
    6. What advice do they have for someone in your position?
    7. Are there key projects or initiatives they’re passionate about right now?

    8. Timing: Since your interview is coming up soon, reach out as soon as possible, ideally a few days prior.

    9. Follow-Up: After your chat, make sure to thank them for their time and insights, regardless of whether you get to connect before the interview.

Remember, networking can be a valuable way to show your genuine interest in the firm and may provide you with noteworthy information that could help you in your interview. Good luck!
