Need career/internship advice

Seeking Career/Internship Guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent Computer Science graduate who transitioned to Accounting in September 2024, as I struggled to find a tech job. I discovered the community college courses leading to a CPA designation, which allows me to apply my degree in a new field.

After speaking with a professor, I learned that passing 1-2 CPA exams could significantly enhance my job prospects, so I’ve focused on that. Unfortunately, I couldn’t pursue internships early on since I only had one Accounting class completed, with all the valuable opportunities requiring that prerequisite.

My brother has been emphasizing the critical importance of gaining internship experience, suggesting that simply passing the CPA exams might not be sufficient to secure a job. However, many firms have filled their internship positions for 2025, and the ones I can still apply to have a less-than-stellar reputation according to this subreddit. As these opportunities start as early as Fall 2025, I’m wondering if I should shift my focus to seeking a full-time role instead. Is it realistic to expect to land a full-time position without any practical Accounting experience?

Currently, I’m two quarters into my accounting studies and plan to take my first CPA exam in late June or early July.

I would really appreciate any insights or advice you can offer!

  1. Hi there,

It’s great to see your proactive approach to navigating your career transition! You’ve made a significant shift from CS to Accounting, and it’s important to consider all aspects of your future job prospects.

Your brother has a point about the value of internships—many firms look for candidates with practical experience, as it demonstrates not only your skills but also your ability to operate in a professional environment. While passing CPA exams is impressive and can certainly improve your job prospects, many employers still value hands-on experience highly when evaluating candidates.

Here are a few steps you might consider:

    1. Look for Internships Regardless: Even if the major firms are filled for 2025, smaller firms or local businesses may still have openings or may be willing to take interns. These experiences can provide invaluable skills and connections. Plus, they’re often more willing to take on someone who is willing to learn.

    2. Networking: Utilize networking opportunities by attending events, joining professional organizations, and connecting with alumni from your college. They may have leads on internship or job opportunities that aren’t widely advertised.

    3. Leverage Your CS Background: Consider roles that combine your CS skills with Accounting, such as data analysis or financial technology. This may open up more opportunities and set you apart from other Accounting candidates.

    4. Explore Non-Traditional Paths: Some companies may offer entry-level positions that don’t require prior accounting experience but can still pave the way for you to gain relevant skills.

    5. Be Open to Contract or Temporary Positions: These can often lead to permanent roles and provide critical experience in the field.

    6. Stay Focused on Your CPA: Continue studying for your CPA exams, as they will help bolster your resume. Passing the first exam can also help you feel more confident in your search for opportunities.

    7. Consider Further Education: If you find that internships remain elusive, you might want to consider additional coursework or certifications that could make you more marketable.

Remember, career transitions can take time, and many professionals have gone through similar challenges. Keep pushing forward, stay flexible, and maintain your focus on your goals. Each step you take will build your experience and lead you closer to a fulfilling position. Good luck, and remember to keep an eye on the long-term vision!
