My wife is almost ready to start taking on clients – looking for advice from experienced freelance bookkeepers.

Launching a Freelance Bookkeeping Career: Seeking Advice for a Strong Start

Embarking on a new professional journey is both exciting and challenging, and my wife is on the verge of doing just that. After years of dedicated work in various Accounting and Bookkeeping roles, she is ready to transition from being employed to building her own freelance practice. With a robust background spanning 15-20 years—including positions as a staff accountant and office manager—she comes equipped with a wealth of experience.

Her impressive portfolio includes running payroll for over 800 employees at a major cable company, managing finances for a real estate developer, and overseeing Bookkeeping for various industries like construction and automotive services. This diverse experience has given her a solid foundation in financial management.

Currently, she is honing her skills further by completing all available QuickBooks certifications and putting the finishing touches on her website. With a polished resume and engagement letter in hand, she is now prepared to embark on her marketing journey to attract clients. It’s important to note that her services will not include tax preparation, as she is neither a CPA nor an EA. Instead, she is focusing on smaller, mid-sized, and newer businesses, providing them with a cost-effective solutions that include cleaning up disorganized financial records, generating profit and loss statements, preparing balance sheets, and offering strategic advice on cost reduction—all with a streamlined, automated approach.

To kick off her client acquisition strategy, we plan to reach out to local CPA firms. However, we would greatly appreciate insights from seasoned freelance bookkeepers on the best methods for making these initial connections. Should we employ email communication, make phone calls, or arrange face-to-face visits? Additionally, any tips on leaving a lasting and positive first impression would be incredibly valuable.

We intend to offer services on an hourly billing basis and are open to any suggestions on securing clients or general advice on establishing a successful freelance bookkeeping practice.

Thank you for your support as we take this exciting step!
