Launching a Freelance Bookkeeping Business: Seeking Guidance from Industry Experts

As my wife prepares to embark on her new journey as a freelance bookkeeper, we are eager to gather insights from seasoned professionals in the field. With nearly two decades of experience in Accounting and Bookkeeping, she is ready to leave the traditional workforce behind and establish her own client base.

Her background is impressive; she has held diverse roles, including staff accountant and Accounting supervisor for a cable company, as well as office manager/bookkeeper for a real estate developer, a construction firm, a painting company, and an auto repair shop. This wealth of experience has equipped her with a robust understanding of various industries and Accounting practices.

Currently, she is finalizing the last of her QuickBooks certifications and is putting the finishing touches on her website. Her engagement letter is complete, and her resume has been updated to reflect her skills and accomplishments. She is on the cusp of launching her marketing efforts to attract new clients.

It’s important to note that my wife will not be providing tax services and is not a licensed CPA or EA. Instead, she aims to offer her services to small and mid-sized businesses, including startups, positioning herself as a cost-effective solution. With a knack for organizing messy books, generating profit and loss statements, creating balance sheets, and identifying cost-cutting opportunities, she is prepared to deliver significant value to her clients. Automation is one of her top priorities, ensuring streamlined processes for better efficiency.

Our initial strategy involves reaching out to local CPA firms, and we are looking for advice on the best way to initiate contact. Should she send an introductory email, make a phone call, or pay a visit in person? Additionally, we would greatly appreciate any tips on how to create a positive first impression during this outreach.

We are also open to other suggestions on landing clients and general best practices for establishing herself in the market.
