Navigating the Path to Freelance Bookkeeping: Seeking Insights from Seasoned Professionals

Embarking on a new professional journey can be both exhilarating and daunting, particularly for those who have spent years honing their skills in the corporate world. My wife is poised to take that leap into the freelance Bookkeeping realm, and we are eager to gather advice from experienced practitioners in the field.

With nearly two decades of expertise under her belt, my wife is well-versed in various facets of Accounting and Bookkeeping. Her impressive career includes roles such as a staff accountant and supervisor managing payroll for over 800 employees at a major cable company. Additionally, she has served as an office manager/bookkeeper for a real estate developer, a construction firm, and an auto repair shop. This diverse experience equips her with a robust understanding of the financial nuances across different industries.

She is heavily invested in mastering QuickBooks and is currently completing all available certifications from the platform. With her website nearing completion, an engagement letter in place, and an updated resume, she stands on the brink of initiating her client outreach efforts.

It’s important to note that while my wife brings a wealth of experience, she will not be offering tax services, and she holds neither CPA nor EA credentials. Her primary focus will be on providing affordable bookkeeping solutions for small, mid-sized, and emerging businesses. She is adept at cleaning up disorganized financial records, creating profit and loss statements, balancing sheets, and identifying potential cost-saving measures—all crucial skills for any business owner. Furthermore, she is committed to implementing automation to streamline operations for her future clients.

Our initial strategy involves reaching out to local CPA firms, and I am reaching out to the community for guidance on how best to make that first contact. Should we opt for email, a phone call, or perhaps a face-to-face visit? What methods have proven most effective in making a positive first impression?

We also plan to structure her services on an hourly billing basis and are open to any tips or innovative approaches to attracting and landing clients in the bookkeeping field.

If you have successful strategies or insights, we would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you in advance for your support as we embark on this exciting venture!
