Mental Health Leave of Absence

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experiences with mental health and taking time off. I previously worked at D and utilized my full three months of FMLA—split into two separate leaves—due to mental health issues. Last year, I transitioned to a new industry and have been at my current job for a year, which has been mostly positive. However, I’ve recently hit a low point where it’s become incredibly difficult to function. I’m considering taking another leave of absence, but I’m grappling with feelings of guilt and shame about needing to do this again. To be honest, I’m struggling immensely and sometimes feel hopeless. I would really appreciate any thoughts or reassurance during this tough time, as it’s hard for me to think clearly. I feel embarrassed about needing multiple leaves, and I wish it didn’t keep coming to this. Thank you for listening.

  1. First of all, I want to say that it’s really courageous of you to share your feelings and experiences. Taking a leave of absence for mental health reasons is not only valid but also necessary when you’re struggling. Your well-being should always come first, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

It’s completely understandable to feel guilt and shame, but remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. Just as someone would take time off for a serious physical ailment, it’s equally important to address mental health needs. You deserve the time and space to focus on your healing and to regain your strength.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I encourage you to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or a mental health professional who can provide support. You don’t have to go through this alone. There’s a lot of help available, and taking that step can be a pivotal part of your journey.

Please don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re not alone in this, and prioritizing your mental health is a brave and commendable choice. Sending you lots of support and positive thoughts as you navigate this difficult time.
