Seeking some advice
Hello everyone, I’m in need of some guidance. I graduated with an Accounting degree in 2017, which I thought was a better choice than a management degree at the time. I quickly received a promotion at my job after graduation, but aside from an internship during college, I’ve never actually worked in the Accounting field. Now I’m looking to apply for jobs, but I don’t feel fully prepared for it. How can I enhance my skills and secure my first role in Accounting? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hi there! It’s great that you’re looking to pivot into Accounting, and your degree is a solid foundation. Here are some steps you can take to sharpen your skills and improve your chances of landing a job in the field:

    1. Online Courses: Consider enrolling in online courses or certifications that focus on key Accounting principles. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer classes on topics like financial Accounting, tax accounting, and Bookkeeping.

    2. Practice Software Skills: Familiarize yourself with Accounting Software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Microsoft Excel. Being proficient in these tools is often a requirement for accounting positions. Many software companies provide free trials or educational versions that you can practice on.

    3. Networking: Reach out to former classmates, professors, or professionals in the industry. Networking can lead to job opportunities and valuable insights into the field. Consider joining accounting groups on LinkedIn or local professional organizations to expand your network.

    4. Informational Interviews: Schedule informational interviews with accountants or financial professionals. This can provide you with a clearer understanding of the daily tasks and expectations of the role, as well as advice on how to transition.

    5. Volunteer or Freelance: Look for opportunities to volunteer your accounting skills for non-profits or small businesses. This can provide hands-on experience and enhance your resume. Alternatively, consider freelance work in Bookkeeping to gain practical experience.

    6. Tailor Your Resume: When applying for jobs, focus on transferable skills from your previous roles. Highlight any financial analysis, budgeting, or leadership experiences that may be relevant.

    7. Stay Updated: Keep up with industry trends and regulations. Resources like the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) or financial news websites can help you stay informed.

    8. Prepare for Interviews: Brush up on common accounting interview questions and be prepared to discuss how your previous experiences are relevant to accounting roles.

Remember, transitioning into a new field can take time, but with proactive steps and a willingness to learn, you can build the confidence needed to succeed in accounting. Good luck!
