My Job Search Journey
I wanted to share my experience leaving public Accounting in hopes that it may inspire someone else!
In December, I made the decision to leave my job at a top 10 public Accounting firm, with no new position lined up as a senior. After taking a two-month break to recharge, by mid-February, I started to feel anxious and ended up applying to around 70 jobs in a single day. So far, I’ve received approximately 20 requests for screening calls. I didn’t pursue most of them as I wasn’t genuinely interested, but I did interview with five different companies, and today, I’m excited to share that I accepted an offer! The process from application to offer took just about a month. During that time, I spoke with five team members, all of whom were friendly, making the interviews quite relaxed—as long as you can hold a conversation!
Having my CPA license definitely made a positive difference in getting past resume screenings. I only have two internships from college and around three years of experience at my previous firm—not as much as some others may have. So, if you’re in public Accounting and considering a change, I highly recommend getting your CPA.
I truly believe that job hunting is a numbers game. If you’re open-minded, just apply, apply, apply! Even if you’re unsure about a position, take the calls or interviews; you might discover that it’s more interesting than you thought. Interestingly, my new role is in a field I never even considered before!
To wrap it up, public accounting can be tough, and I definitely wouldn’t want to go through another busy season, but if I had to do it over, I’d make sure to have something lined up before leaving!
