Navigating the Job Hunt: A Unique Experience
Has anyone else been on the job hunt lately and noticed that many companies are looking for very specific industry experience for private roles?
To give you some background, I’m currently transitioning out of public Accounting. I was a standout performer at my firm, but after receiving a year-end salary raise that left me below the average for CPAs with my level of experience in my area, I realized it was time to move on. I’ve been searching for about a week now and have had quite a few interviews with recruiters for the roles I’m interested in. However, it seems that many managerial and senior positions require over five years of experience in the same industry just to be considered.
Is this a trend that’s always existed, or is it something new that you’ve all noticed in the job market?

It sounds like you’re in a challenging yet interesting position in your job hunt! From what you’ve described, it seems that many industries are indeed looking for very specific experience, especially for managerial roles. It can be frustrating to feel like your skills and achievements aren’t being recognized simply because you don’t have experience in a particular sector.
While it’s common for many roles, especially at higher levels, to require industry-specific experience, it does feel like there’s been an increasing trend towards this in recent years. Companies often want to minimize the learning curve and ensure candidates are well-versed in industry nuances, which can be challenging for those transitioning from one field to another.
However, don’t lose hope! Your experience in public Accounting, especially as a top performer, is a strong asset. Highlight transferable skills such as leadership, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and client management in your applications. Tailoring your resume and emphasizing how your public Accounting background can bring value to potential employers in their specific industries might make a difference.
Networking can also be incredibly beneficial—consider reaching out to professionals in your target industries to gain insights or even referrals. They might also appreciate your unique perspective from public Accounting, which can add breadth to their teams.
Keep persevering; often, the right opportunity comes when you least expect it!
