I’ve been job hopping every 1-2 years and need advice.

Navigating Job Hopping: Seeking Guidance for a Stable Career Path

Hello, fellow career navigators!

Today, I find myself reaching out to gain some insights into a challenge that many in the workforce may face—how to manage a resume that reflects a pattern of job hopping. Having spent nearly six years in the tax industry, I’ve come to realize that my employment history might be raising some eyebrows.

Most of my career transitions occurred every one to two years, largely driven by the desire to capitalize on the opportunities that arose during the pandemic. Though I aimed for incremental pay raises, I often felt that my earnings only just scraped by. Fortunately, I’m currently approaching the two-year milestone in my present role, which has finally provided a semblance of stability. However, the thought of relocating out of state is weighing heavily on my mind, and I’m concerned that my frequent job changes may undermine my perceived work ethic.

Adding to this dilemma, my current supervisor is keen on promoting me to a partner level. This would certainly enhance my professional trajectory, but with the high cost of living in my desired area, I fear it might come at the expense of the quality time I cherish with my family.

My question is, how should I approach my job search? Should I start applying for new positions and hope prospective employers will be understanding of my circumstances? Or would it be more prudent to consider omitting certain roles from my resume?

I’m keen to hear from anyone who may have faced similar challenges and successfully navigated them. What strategies did you employ to reposition your career? Your advice and experiences would be invaluable as I chart my next steps. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful insights!
